A little black dress has the reputation for being the perfect party dress in the winter, but it can be perfect for a summer barbecue, if you choose the right fit and fabric. In the winter any fabric can work, but the perfect little black dress for summer should be cotton or linen, since linen is so high maintenance and wrinkles easily I prefer cotton. Go for a sleeveless or cold shoulder cut (love this one) to stay cool and avoid unsightly sweat stains (gross!) and an empire waist or fit and flare silhouette to keep the dress looking light and airy. Add pops of color with colorful jewelry or a bold purse to keep the outfit appropriate for summer.
I’ve decided to add lots of blonde highlights to my hair, since I’m starting to get some grays in the top layer and around my face. I’m going through the gradual progression of getting my naturally brunette hair lighter and lighter by doing a sequence of blonde highlights. It’s definitely testing my patience, but hopefully the end result will be pretty and will be an easy way for me to gracefully hide my graying hair. You can follow each round of highlights in the “Hair of the Day” Facebook group.
The weekend was so much fun! I wore this little black dress outfit for dinner with friends who also have a little three year old. It was so cute watching the two little ones play for hours in the yard. Now that the toddlers have mastered the concept of sharing, it’s the sweetest thing to watch them play together. On Saturday, we threw a toddler summer bash party, which included a bounce house, sno-cones, popcorn, and a water fight. Needless to say the little ones had a blast! I wore this outfit (minus the heels) and a crown braid for the party. All the moms kept asking me how I did my hair, so I’ll be working on a hairstyle tutorial for it this week.
