One of our favorite ways to get exercise as a family is to go on little hikes. The little one is always interested in hiking if it involves climbing, so lately we have been heading to the foothills for short 1-2 mile hikes with lots of areas for him to climb. We try and keep him motivated to keep moving by hunting for rocks, pointing out interesting bugs, and allowing him to climb all he wants when the opportunity arises.
The mountains in New Mexico are one of the major reasons the state has been nick named “The Land of Enchantment” and they truly are enchanting. The Sandia foothills are desert terrain and as you hike farther and higher the terrain becomes more green and has tons of larger boulders that provide much welcomed shade from the harsh sun. It’s a gorgeous site and easily accessible from most of the neighborhoods along the foothills.
We are preparing to travel to Alaska in August, so we are trying out all our hiking gear before we leave to make sure we love it. You can read more about that here. I recently bought these hiking boots, which are a complete game changer when it comes to hiking on rocky terrain. They give so much support and stability that I didn’t even notice all the rocks or stumble along like I usually do in my sneakers. We lucked out when we were shopping at REI and found these toddler hiking boots on sale for $20! The little one has been talking non-stop about his “hik–in boooots”.
